Your questions about sex

i am 14 and a virgin, i find it very uncomfortable and hard to put tampons on so i use pads, but as i cant use tampons, will i be able to have sex?

  1. I was 11 when I started my periods, and for ten years I used pads and trying tampons had me in tears of pain and frustration. Sex, when I eventually felt comfortable and ready for it, was not a problem. Recently I have been suffering from a very uncomfortable sweat rash from using pads and the doctor suggested that I try tampons. I did whay Lucy advises and was in the house all day the day my period started, I used a very small tampon (Lillets lite) and I used a non-applicator which sort of freaked me out but I found my finger (which obviously can bend to the shape of the inside of me) a little more comfortable than the cardboard applicators. I have to say that once you get over the fear of putting the tampon in there it is very comfortable to wear and you really can forget that you are on your period. There's no embarrassing rustling in the toilet either. I remember waiting at school until everyone left the bathroom so that I could change my pad. When the time comes, as Louise said, you will feel excited by sex and it should be easy as you will feel ready and trust in the person you share it with. Hope this helps :)”

  2. I am not a virgin but like yourself I find tampons very uncomfortable. I am however able to have sex and it is not uncomfortable. I think pads were just the right choice for me. When you are ready to have sex you become excited and your body makes it easier for the penis to go in. When I'm on my period I'm not in the least bit excited and can be quite sore on the inside and I think that this is normal in a lot of women. Tampons are very personal and don't worry, when it comes to the time that you are ready to have sex it is very different. Lucy's comments on introducing yourself to tampons are really helpful too so I would definitely try her method if you are determined to make the switch. Best of luck!”

  3. It took me a very long time to start using tampons. I even had sex before I started using them properly as a tampon is far smaller than the average erect penis I find this rather strange but when giving birth a woman's virginia can dilate up to the size of a typical Dairylea box therefore as long as you stay relaxed you will most definitely be able to use a tampon/have sex.
The first time you use tampons do it on a day where you have no need to leave the comfort of your own home so you have a chance to adapt and get used to it and you will then always have the option of removing it if you are in discomfort.
When inserting one it always helps to squat slightly, once you use them alot you won't need to but when I first began this was a big help.”
